PASCHAL CANDLES - 2008

In this special year when Australia, and particularly Sydney, host World Youth Day, we are offering two Paschal Candle designs based on the World Youth Day theme from Acts 1:8
"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;
you will be my witnesses".

Both crosses are rich in symbolism and have been designed for us by Sr Dorothy Woodward rsj. Dorothy has also designed other WYD graphics which will soon appear as a WYD link on our website.

Design A - Fire and Water
The strong flame flowing through the centre of this design symbolises the Holy Spirit coming upon our land, our Church and our hearts during this special year of World Youth Day. The circle of blue with the surrounding waves represents the world coming together and picks up the hues of beautiful Sydney Harbour. The colours of red, orange, gold blue and aqua echo the colours of the WYD logo.

The design also celebrates the two great symbols of the Easter Vigil...the flames of the paschal fire and the waters of Baptism. A good symbol can take on several meanings and Dorothy's design certainly does that!

The text featured on the top and bottom band is taken from the great Easter Proclamation, The Exultet:
May this Easter candle.
Glow to the honour of God

Design B - Australia
The cross is a celebration of the Great South Land of the Holy Spirit! It is different to anything we have offered before and is uniquely Australian! It includes many of our national symbols and also honours the colours of our peoples and our land. It will be a wonderful choice for:

* parishes hosting the World Youth Day Cross in the coming months
* for those wishing to participate in WYD in a big way
* anyone simply wanting something a bit different and very Australian!

The words on the bands are based on the Acts 8:1 quote and read:
You will receive power from the Holy Spirit
and you will be my witnesses.
